[2025 01 24] The Challenge of Creating 3D Models for Games
Creating 3D models for a game can be quite challenging. I’m just not entirely sure whether it’s harder to model a real-life object, because the player might – and most likely will – compare your model to the real thing, or to create a fantasy object. I often rely on references for this. These can be anything – even children’s toys or various elements from the real world.
For the fourth level boss, I took the approach of searching Google for images of mechanical components. I then copied a few interesting ones and combined them into a single image. I already had a rough idea of the object’s structure in my mind, so I knew how it should look overall. But, as always, the devil is in the details.
I’m not sure how many of you have been reading my posts from the beginning, but I’m working on recreating an old game. I draw inspiration from the original 2D sprites and port them into 3D. However, I’ve often noticed that what looks good in 2D doesn’t necessarily look good in 3D. It’s clear that you can take inspiration, but in the end, you can’t do without a bit of imagination.
